What Counts as an Average Reaction Time
Reaction time, in the sense used throughout this piece, means simple reaction time: how long it takes to respond to a single expected stimulus, like a light changing color, with no decision-making involved. That’s different from choice reaction time, where you have to pick between multiple possible responses, which is naturally slower.
For a healthy adult reacting to a visual stimulus, most large-scale studies put the average simple reaction time somewhere between 200 and 300 milliseconds, with 250 milliseconds commonly cited as the population midpoint. Auditory reaction time tends to run 20 to 50 milliseconds faster than visual, since sound reaches the brainstem faster than light reaches the visual cortex, which is part of why sprinters react to a starting gun rather than a flag.
Average Reaction Time by Age
Reaction time isn’t fixed. It changes across the lifespan in a fairly predictable curve: it improves through childhood and adolescence as the nervous system matures, peaks in the late teens and twenties, and then gradually slows from there. Based on aggregated data from large population studies, here’s roughly what that curve looks like:

One of the most cited studies on this pattern, led by researchers Geoff Der and Ian Deary and published in the journal Neuropsychologia, tracked reaction time across more than 7,000 participants and found that it peaks around age 24 and then declines gradually, with the decline accelerating after age 50. Separately, the MindCrowd research project, which has gathered simple visual reaction time data from well over 100,000 participants online, found reaction time slows by roughly 3 to 7 milliseconds for every additional year of age, alongside measurable declines in working memory.
The mechanisms behind that slowdown are well understood. Nerve signals travel a little slower as the insulating layer around nerve fibers gradually thins with age, neurotransmitter production and receptor sensitivity decline, and the muscles receiving the final signal become slightly less responsive. None of that means decline is inevitable at the individual level, though. Research consistently finds that physically active older adults post reaction times noticeably closer to younger baselines than sedentary peers of the same age, and a well rested, active 50 year old can easily out react a tired, distracted 20 year old on any given test.
There’s also a small, consistent gender gap in the data: men tend to average around 10 to 15 milliseconds faster than women on simple visual reaction time tasks, and a smaller, separate body of research has found left-handed people average a few milliseconds faster than right-handed people, a difference attributed to how the brain organizes motor signal processing.
How You Compare to F1 Drivers and Elite Athletes
This is where things get genuinely interesting, because the answer isn’t quite what most people expect.
F1 drivers average 190 to 210 milliseconds at the race start, reacting to the five red lights going out. That’s faster than the general population average, but not by an enormous margin, and it isn’t the fastest reaction time category out there. Elite drivers can post starts in the 170 to 190 millisecond range, and the official record for a competitive race start belongs to Valtteri Bottas, who reacted in 0.201 seconds (201 milliseconds) at the 2017 Austrian Grand Prix, a mark that’s still frequently cited as the benchmark F1 start.
Olympic sprinters are actually faster than F1 drivers. World Athletics sets 100 milliseconds as the false-start threshold in sprinting: react any faster than that and it’s ruled a false start, since it’s considered physiologically impossible to have genuinely reacted to the gun that quickly. In practice, elite sprinters typically react in the 120 to 180 millisecond range off the blocks, using an auditory stimulus, which is inherently faster to process than a visual one.
Esports professionals sit in a similar bracket. Competitive first-person shooter players average around 150 to 180 milliseconds, roughly 30 to 40 percent faster than an untrained adult of the same age, a gap that researchers attribute almost entirely to thousands of hours of trained visual anticipation rather than any innate advantage.
The pattern across all three groups points to the same conclusion: elite performers aren’t operating with fundamentally different nervous systems. They’ve trained their brains to anticipate a stimulus rather than purely react to it, which shaves real milliseconds off the clock without technically breaking the laws of human neurology.
The Fastest Reaction Times Ever Recorded
There’s a hard physiological floor beneath all of this. Signals still have to travel through neurons at a finite speed and cross synapses one at a time, and muscles still take a moment to physically respond once they receive the signal. Because of that, researchers generally treat anything meaningfully under 100 milliseconds as being at or past the edge of genuine human reaction, rather than a real, repeatable response to the stimulus in question.
Within that ceiling, a few records stand out:
- The fastest verified simple reaction time in controlled lab conditions is generally cited around 101 milliseconds, recorded for an elite sprinter using an auditory stimulus under strict testing conditions.
- Valtteri Bottas holds the most widely cited official F1 start reaction record at 0.201 seconds, from the 2017 Austrian Grand Prix.
- A handful of anomalous F1 timing results have circulated over the years, including a reported 0.001 second reading during a 2019 Japanese Grand Prix incident, almost certainly a sensor or measurement artifact rather than a real reaction, since it sits far below anything physiologically possible. These numbers make for a fun trivia footnote, but they’re a good reminder to be skeptical of any reaction time claim that sounds too fast to be real.
What Actually Affects Your Reaction Time
A handful of factors move your number up or down on any given day, separate from your age bracket:
- Sleep. Poor or insufficient sleep can add 20 to 50 milliseconds or more to your reaction time, on top of any age-related baseline.
- Practice and familiarity. Repeated exposure to a specific test format measurably improves your score over time, which is part of why comparing your result to a general population average matters more than comparing it to someone using a different setup or device.
- Physical fitness. Regular cardiovascular activity is associated with faster reaction times across every age bracket, and appears to be one of the more reliable ways to partially offset age-related decline.
- Device and display latency. If you’re testing yourself online, your screen’s refresh rate and input lag can add anywhere from 5 to 30 milliseconds on top of your true biological reaction time, which is worth remembering before comparing an online score directly to a published lab figure.
