You’ve probably played enough Tic-Tac-Toe to notice a pattern: against anyone who’s paying attention, the game almost always ends in a draw. That’s not bad luck or boring opponents. It’s math. Tic-Tac-Toe has been fully solved, every possible position has a known best outcome, and the answer is that perfect play from both sides always ends in a tie, no matter who goes first or how the rest of the game unfolds.
That doesn’t mean the game is pointless, or that it’s not worth learning properly. Knowing exactly why it draws, and exactly where opponents go wrong, is what turns you from someone who occasionally loses into someone who never does, and it’s a genuinely useful way to understand basic game theory without needing any math background at all.
Is Tic-Tac-Toe Always a Draw?

Tic-Tac-Toe is small enough that it’s been completely mapped out. There are 255,168 possible ways a full game can play out from an empty board to a finished one, and only 5,478 genuinely distinct board positions once you account for rotations and reflections. Every single one of those positions has a known correct move.
The reason a draw is the guaranteed outcome comes down to space. X moves first and ends up with one more mark on the board than O by the end of the game, which sounds like an advantage. But the board only has eight possible winning lines, three rows, three columns, two diagonals, and O always has enough room to block whichever line X is building toward before it becomes an unstoppable fork. Neither side can build a genuine two-move-ahead threat that the other can’t see coming in time.
What Happens When Someone Doesn’t Play Perfectly
The “always a draw” rule only holds when both sides play their best move every single time. In practice, most games aren’t played by two people who’ve memorized the optimal responses, which is exactly why one side usually does win. Looking at every possible way the game could be played out, not just optimal play, the first player (X) wins roughly half of all possible games, the second player (O) wins in a bit under a third of them, and the rest end in a draw. O consistently comes out behind in that breakdown, which makes sense once you think about it: X always gets to move first and always ends up with one more mark on the board by the time the game ends, so O has less room for error throughout.

The Best First Move
If you’re going first, take the center. It’s part of more potential winning lines than any other square (four of the eight total), which gives you the most flexibility for building threats later. If the center is somehow already unavailable, a corner is your next best option, corners are part of three winning lines each, while edge squares are only part of two.
How to Respond to Every Opening
If you’re going second and your opponent took the center, take a corner. If they took a corner, take the center, this is the single most important defensive response in the entire game, and skipping it is the single most common way people lose. If they took an edge (one of the four non-corner, non-center squares), taking the center is still your strongest reply.
From there, the core defensive habit is simple: after every single move your opponent makes, scan the board for any line where they have two marks and an open third square, and block it immediately. Do this every turn, without exception, and you cannot lose.
How to Force a Win When Your Opponent Slips Up
The way you actually win, rather than just avoid losing, is by creating a “fork”: a position where you have two different possible winning lines open at once. Your opponent can only block one of them, and you win on the next move. Forks usually come from playing corners, since a mark in a corner is part of three lines at once, giving you more chances to set up two simultaneous threats than a mark on an edge ever will.
Practicing Against Different Difficulty Levels

The second is tunnel vision: focusing so hard on building your own line that you miss your opponent building theirs. Blocking has to happen every single turn, not just when it’s convenient.
The third is playing edges early. An edge square is part of only two winning lines, compared to three for a corner and four for the center, so an early edge move is almost always a wasted tempo. If you’re deciding between a corner and an edge and the center isn’t available, take the corner. It’s a small decision that compounds over the course of the game, and it’s often the difference between setting up a fork later and never having the option in the first place.
