About this game
Discover a New Constellation
Discover a New Constellation is a 3D star map built from real astronomical data. Instead of just looking at the night sky, you get to connect stars into shapes of your own choosing, essentially inventing your own constellation the way ancient astronomers once did, minus the multi-year commitment.
Drag to orbit the full sky, hover over any star for its real name and data, and click to start linking stars into a chain. When you find a shape you like, save or share it. There is no wrong answer here, some of the best constellations in actual human history started as someone looking at a random cluster of dots and deciding it looked like a bear.
How to play
- Drag anywhere on the sky to orbit and explore the full 3D star field.
- Hover over a star to see its real name and basic data.
- Click stars in sequence to connect them into your own constellation.
- Save or share your creation once you're happy with the shape.
Tips and strategy
- Zoom into denser star clusters for more interesting connection options than sparse regions.
- Try naming your constellation something ridiculous, half the fun of ancient constellations is that "Scales" and "Big Dipper" made total sense to somebody once.
- Rotate the full sky slowly before settling on a region, the most interesting shapes are rarely the first ones you notice.
What you get
- A full 3D star map built from real astronomical data
- Drag-to-orbit navigation across the entire sky
- Real star names and data on hover
- Click-to-connect constellation building with save and share
